Anne Murray, whose singular voice made her country-pop icon in 1970s '80s, returns with dual-disc set 16 her greatest hits, paired 15 Tin Pan Alley pop standards. While her own signature tunes ("Snowbird," "Danny's Song") withstand time's brutal test artistry currency, Murray doesn't fare nearly well with pre-World War II tunes. She finds modern blues heart "What'll I Do," but she's often sidetracked by cheesy arrangements (the Dixieland treatment "After You've Gone" particularly onerous), ultimately collection fails engage. Such hoary songs "Dream Little Dream Me" "You Made Me Love You" too quaint schmaltzy for woman who came age in 1970s. Unlike great Rosemary Clooney, who could infuse most shopworn classic new meaning, overall, Murray lacks emotional resonance or experience her voice convey authenticity. Her corduroy alto remains thing wonder, however, may make even her most casual fans yearn hear it employed on stellar album contemporary material.
