Filling gulf between OK Computer's epic progressive rock Kid A's skittering electronic atrics, Hail to Thief borrows equally from each. Its title implies that this will be collection filled songs anger dissent, but Radiohead no longer howl at moon like y did 1995's The Bends. Instead, y use eloquent metaphors complicated arrangements express uncertainty, fear anger arising from 2000 U.S. presidential election and post-9/11 world. There’s no doubt about where Thom Yorke company stand; prog-rock break "2 + 2 = 5" Yorke's terror at thought being "put in dock" make that immediately clear. But re's prevailing sense powerlessness here. The tinkling piano behind cold sonic surface "Backdrifts" and brief, swooping melody in middle "Sail to Moon" islands in sea confusion. Like band's best work, Thief requires more than few listens fully appreciate, but those who stick around will be richly rewarded.
