WHAT do you have do get Tim Minchin write perform song your honour? Just pan his show. In Song For Phil Daoust , a rapeutic ballad about Guardian critic who rubbished Minchin's Edinburgh show 2005, Perth-bred musician-comic indulges Hannibal Lecter-style revenge fantasies, including making Daoust eat pieces his own face.
(For record, Daoust described Minchin "a bog-standard stand-up with silly voice and few good songs").
Based Ready For This? , Daoust should at least get ready eat his hat. Minchin's third stage show (after Dark Side 2005 So Rock 2006) opens with smoke machine an ironic rock star pose Who Needs A Band?, multi-tracked squall stadium-rock bombast blasted through multi-storey PA system. Loud, certainly. Funny? Not very.
It's hard sustain that kind irony when you can sell out large rock venue like Enmore three times over.
It takes few unnerving minutes Minchin establish audience rapport in relative quiet that follows. In fact, it takes cleverest song of night: Taboo , dazzling piece anagrammatic wordplay what Americans call "the N-Bomb".
Minchin's take American culture informs much Ready For This? , while taking shots at marketing hyperbole religious conservatism isn't original, he sets about it with zeal a Richard Dawkins, ending in ferocious, hillbilly send-up Bible literalism, The Good Book .
Funnier still If I Didn't Have You (Somebody Else Would Do) , deft pop ballad parody (performed an enticing shimmy at every chorus) that takes big mathematical probability stick to cliches made-for-each-other romance.
Minchin's signature anthem, Canvas Bags , rounds off first act but re's no convincing comeback from 20-minute interval at 60-minute mark, even with nine-minute Beat poem about run-in with New Age chick at dinner party and little help from break-dancing audience plant in bear suit.
