Five years before        release       ANThology, Alien Ant Farm befriended Papa Roach,        n fellow strugglers on        California club circuit. And so AAF wound up signing       Papa Roach's New Noise Records. AAF have furthermore strengthened        ir Roach connection by employing Jay Baumgardner, producer of        ir benefactors' Infest,       lend sheen to        noise. The result doesn't show      tremendous range, but      generally excellent,          sweeping, soaring guitars ("Whisper," "Stranded")         shuddering riffs ("Wish"), putting one      mind       a less disturbing version       Alice      Chains. Standouts include        opener, "Courage," led by Mike Cosgrove's off-kilter clatter         Dryden Mitchell's winding lyrics;      chopping, pleading cover       Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal"; and        revved up "Flesh         Bone." With        tense, Pearl Jam-like "Attitude," AAF attempt       change        mood         tempo,         one hopes        y'll continue such sonic explorations. For now, ANThology is      palatable aperitif.
